Do Not Assume
Do Not Assume
All that is needed to do is to use some common sense while acting around a person with a disability.
Do not assume that a person with a disability always needs somebody's help. People need to always ask before acting.People with disabilities may find it greatly offensive.
Do not assume that a person who has one disability also has some other problems. It is wrongly assumed that a person who has cerebral palsy is also mentally impaired.
Do not assume that a person with a disability is looking for pity or sympathy for himself. Many people assume that their life is unhappy and so every one should feel sorry for them.
Do not assume that a person with a disability easily gets offended. Most people with disabilities have, over the years, learned tolerance and have developed a thick skin when it comes to how others deal with their disability. They have learned to not get upset at someone's first offense.
Do not assume that a person with the person with a disability is in need of an attendant. We need to assume the opposite, particularly when talking. Always talk to the person with the disability instead of through their companion.
